To be a woman

Tomorrow is International Women’s Day. As I approach this day, I keep thinking about how I can honor the women in my life and the women before me, who have all made it possible for me to be me with all the privileges and the successes that I carry. So I decided to write this poem, dedicated to all women who know what it means to be a woman.

To be a woman,
is to be told
that you have to be
pretty or smart,
or your dreams will only come true
if you stand behind a man.

To be a woman,
is to know
that the moment you leave your home
you are vulnerable to judgement
because of what it means to be a woman,
as defined by those who are not.

To be a woman,
is to be told
that you have to pick and choose
how society should understand you
because
there is no room for you to be complex
it just makes you too complicated.

But from a woman who knows,
I can say to all women,
know that you are inherently strong
because
with all the negative experiences
you have endured
so far for being you,
you still imagine a better place
for yourself, your loved ones, and the world.

Thanks for stopping by.
