Shopping Diaries: October 2018

After overspending on my wardrobe last year, I decided to track my spending. At the beginning of each month, I will review and reflect on the things I bought in the previous month. I hope the insights I gain from doing this will help me accomplish three goals: 1) avoid overspending, 2) shop smarter (quality not quantity), and 3) have a functional closet full of pieces I love to wear.

Snapshot of last month’s receipt

$45 Hanro camisole

+ $25 Everlane long sleeve tee

$70.83 Rent the Runway dress rental for a wedding in November

+ $289.64 Miu Miu clutch via TheRealReal

$98 Demylee X J.Crew scarf

= $528.47

The details (what I bought and kept)

Hanro camisole in white (size xs)

I’ve been meaning to get a plain white tank to wear underneath low cut/sheer things. This camisole gets the job done. Did I have to pay $45 for one? No. But I did because I’ve heard good things about the brand, Hanro. And now I know why. The material looks luxe and hasn’t pilled on me…yet. It tucks perfectly into jeans so there’s no weird bunching underneath sweaters and tops. Final verdict: two thumbs up.

Everlane long-sleeve box-cut pocket tee (size xs)

I’ve been eyeing this tee for a while. I finally decided to buy because Everlane only gives free shipping when you buy two items. This was my second item. I ordered it with the Everlane corduroy straight leg crop pants (sold out) in the gold/yellow shade and it didn’t work out. I’m not too convinced about mustard yellow. I need further evidence.

Anyway, this is a pretty basic tee.  I do love the perfectly cropped, boxy cut and chest pocket. It also feels really soft after you wash it and air dry. I can’t decide if I want to wear this to sleep, or out and about. I guess I don’t have to choose…I can do it both (in Cardi B’s voice, of course).

I didn’t want to buy a new dress for an upcoming wedding so I decided to rent. I had to order in advance because apparently there are a lot of weddings happening this time of year, which makes for slim pickings. Really hoping this dress will work out because I ordered it in a 0 and it was my only size option. Fingers crossed. Anyway, if you’re curious about Rent the Runway, I’ve written about my experience here.

Miu Miu metalassé clutch in navy via TheRealReal (referral link to get $25 off your first order)

I’m not going to lie this was an impulse purchase.

I was perusing late at night (a dangerous time) for a clutch/mini evening bag and everything I wanted was too expensive or too trendy. My ideal bag would be The Row’s ascot bag that everyone in fashion seems to have. I love it because it’s so simple and perfect. Except for the price. So, naturally I perused on TheRealReal and found this Miu Miu clutch in pristine condition and on sale. I also had a $50 credit, so in a moment of weakness I ordered it. After a whole week of waiting, it finally arrived.

Size comparison: Clutch v. iPhone 8 (Vadim’s).

My immediate reaction was to smile at how mini it is. Does anyone else have a mild obsession with mini versions of things?

It is a tad smaller than I expected. It does have two slots for phone, keys, and cards. It does fit my big ole iPhone X though, so that’s all that matters since it’s final sale.

Of course, I could have saved the almost $300 bucks, but at least now I have something that 1) makes me happy when I look at it 2) I could resell if I ever wanted to and 3) solves the whole “I need a clutch” dilemma…until I can get my hands on that ascot bag, of course.

P.S. There’s this pink/nude version with studs currently on sale via TheRealReal that is really cute too: link here. Use code “REAL” for 20% off and you can use my referral link for an extra $25 off 🙂  *One thing I will say about ordering from TheRealReal is you have to pay almost $12 for shipping, and it’s not even express.

Demylee x J.Crew leopard-print scarf

Outfit details: Demylee x J.Crew scarf / Everlane sweater layered over Reformation knit dress  / J.Crew coat (mine is 2 seasons ago) / Pact leggings / Rothy’s loafers (referral link for $20 off your first purchase) / Cuyana leather backpack

I finally decided to get this scarf after pining it over it for the past few weeks. I initially ordered the Acne Studios Canada scarf in gray, but it just didn’t look right on me. I wish I had taken a photo of it, but I guess I was just that disinterested in how it looked on me. Anyway, I’m so happy I got this scarf. I know J.Crew quality can be a real hit or miss, but I’m really impressed with the Demylee (known for their knits) collaboration. The scarf is 100% wool but it doesn’t feel itchy at all. Which is a big deal for me because I always find wool itchy. Needless to say, I’ll be wearing this A. LOT.

The numbers

$528.47 = October total

$4,296.46 = Year to date total

4 = Number of items added to my closet in October

36 = Number of items added to my closet so far this year

Final thoughts

One thing I definitely didn’t “need” this month was the Miu Miu clutch. Yes I could have bought something that was cheaper, but I was also thinking about resale value. Designer items will always be desirable. Unless something drastically changes in our economy, our world, or our inclination towards nice things. (I’m not an economist, so don’t quote me on this). And, I know that mini bags are not for everyone. They’re trendy now, but soon they might not be. Fashion is cyclical though. So it’ll come back around. It always does.

As for the tank, tee, scarf, those are all basics that were missing from my closet. Can you believe I’m still adding in basics at this point of the year? In my defense, my closet was really bare at the start of this year. Especially, after I decided to focus on shopping mindfully and ethically.

And of course, the dress rental was necessary (for me) because I want to wear something “new” without having to commit to buying one and keeping it in my closet.

Last but not least, I am left with $703.54 to spend for the remainder of the year. I need to zero in and focus. What will I actually wear for the next two months that I don’t already have? And, if I don’t have those things, is it because they’re missing OR is it because they’re not necessary? Stay tuned till next time !

What did you buy this month? Would you have bought a new dress for a wedding or rented? What is something that is on your to-buy list for November?

Thanks for stopping by.

See you in my next post!

Sophie 🙂
