Things I really liked in May 2018

Goodbye May!

The month of May was very good to me. Aside from my eczema flare up, I got to spend my birthday in Italy! Vadim and I hiked to the beach, ate pasta, drank wine, and found the cutest local cat begging for food. I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better way to celebrate.

Then when we got home from our trip, I got to do a second interview for a job. And, I got it!! I start on Monday, and I am so excited! If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, then you know how much of a struggle my job hunt has been. But struggle no more! It happened!!

Truly, May has been wonderful to me. And on this positive note, let’s get into my fashion, beauty, and lifestyle favorites.

Fashion Favorites

1. Reformation jeans

These are the comfiest jeans I currently own. True to their name (Danny relaxed fit jean), they fit very relaxed throughout the leg, but do not stretch in the waist or rear throughout the day. I wore these almost everyday during my Italy trip and even on the 9 hour plane ride home. And now that I’m back home, they’re my designated weekend jeans. P.S. I reviewed them and another pair of Reformation jeans here.

2. Striped straight trousers from See by Chloe via Rent the Runway
*Found this exact pair for $75 in a size FR 40/US 8 in pristine condition via TheRealReal

I am so glad I rented these trousers just in time for Italy. They were so comfortable and effortlessly chic. I loved wearing them with my Isabel Marant sneakers. And can imagine how good it would look with just about any shoe. I am now on the hunt to find a similar pair to add to my closet permanently.

Beauty Favorites

1. Lush sleepy body lotion

I bought this on my second day in Italy after realizing that lotion is something my skin apparently cannot live without. I didn’t bring any with me on my trip because I figured the humidity would hold me over. It didn’t and luckily, Florence had a Lush store a few minutes away from our Airbnb.

Anyway, this stuff smells sweet yet incredibly calming. It’s also this pretty lavender color that disappears once its blended into the skin. It’s also very hydrating, so if you’re not feeling super dry (especially in the summer), this might be something you want to bookmark for the fall/winter. In terms of whether it helps me fall asleep, I can’t say with 100% certainty that it’s due to this, but lately, I’ve been getting sleepy a lot earlier.

2. Eczema Honey

This is the only thing that worked on my eczema flare up on my face. See picture below for before and after. Hope it doesn’t freak you out too much.

I love that it only contains five ingredients, all of which are simple and straightforward. I like to apply it on dry, clean skin post-cleanse. I apply it in light layers and build up so it can be fully absorbed.

Then I apply my usual moisturizer (Make Prem Safe Relief Cream) on top, and it creates a very hydrated effect. My skin has definitely calmed down since, and I’m glad I have this in my skincare arsenal now.

3. Burt’s Bees sensitive skin facial cleanser

After my eczema flare up, I knew I needed a gentler cleanser as my second cleanse in the evenings. I used to really like the Derma E purifying gel cleanserbut my skin has become too sensitive for it (Vadim still uses it and likes it though). So, I decided to give this Burt’s Bees one a try, and my verdict is: I love it. It leaves my skin feeling clean and nourished. So far, so good.

Lifestyle Favorites

1. Taking a cooking class

While Vadim and I were in Florence, we decided to take a pizza and gelato making class through the company, Walkabout Florence (highly recommend them). I really enjoyed learning how to make a proper Italian pizza and gelato. It also didn’t hurt that they served red wine, and had the most entertaining teacher (Luca) school us on our (lack of) pizza making skills. Now that I’m back home, I’m definitely inspired to do something like this again. I wouldn’t be opposed to a pasta making class. Sensing a theme here?

2. Sell it like Serhant, reality tv show on Bravo

I initially didn’t include this in my favorites because I forgot about it. Luckily, Vadim reminded me about it yesterday and I knew I had to share it with you all. It’s a really uplifting show where Ryan Serhant (big deal real estate guy also on Million Dollar Listings NY) helps struggling salespeople overcome roadblocks and build confidence to do their job well. Coincidentally, Ryan always meets up with these people when they’re a few days away from losing their job. He spends a few days with them and by the end of their experience, they all show significant improvement in their ability to sell. If you’re looking for something new to watch that will make you feel good and give you a few happy tears, you might want to give this one a go.

3. Trader Joe’s pick of the month: Kettle popped popcorn chips

If popcorn and rice cakes had a flavorful love child, it would taste like these chips. Perfect for when you’re craving something salty and sweet, which is always the case when I get a little hangry. I highly recommend that you squat down low to find these in the snack aisle. And I highly recommend Trader Joe’s bump their shelf space up to eye level. Because they are just that good.

That’s a wrap on my May favorites. What are some of your favorites?

Thanks for stopping by. See you in my next post!

Sophie 🙂
